Understanding Accidental Ingestion

When your child eats anything that is not food!  💄  🧼  🔋

Common Types: Children, especially toddler age, are curious about objects that are not food!  

  • Type 1: The most common substances are beauty and bath products (like makeup, soaps, lotions, etc) and cleaning products in children under 4 years of age. 
  • Type 2: When to worry the most - if your child ingested a button battery or more than one magnets

How to Manage after initial ingestion

✅ Call the Poison Control Center @1-800-222-1222 - follow their treatment recommendations!

Count any pills in bottles you are concerned they may have ingested and take pictures of all labels of any products they may have consumed. 

Try to establish a timeline if possible for the amount of substance that may have been ingested

  • You have any questions! We will follow up with you in the guidelines laid out by poison control if you do not go to see a medical provider in person

When to Go to the ER / call 911

🚨 Seek immediate emergency care if your child is: 

  • Ingested a button battery or several magnets - ER
  • Seems like they are drowsy or lethargic, are not breathing normally or the pupils of their eyes are pinpoint in size - 911
