Acne Follow-Up Guide: What Parents Need to Know

Understanding Acne

What is it?

Acne is a common skin condition caused by clogged oil glands in the skin—most often triggered by hormonal changes during puberty. It's not caused by poor hygiene or eating chocolate.

What to expect:

  • Improvement typically begins in 6–8 weeks
  • Acne may persist for years, but is very manageable
  • Scarring is rare and often avoidable with gentle care

Common Types

  • Blackheads: Open clogged pores
  • Whiteheads: Closed clogged pores
  • Red pimples: Inflammation and leakage from blocked glands

When to Manage at Home

✅ You can manage your child's acne at home when:

  • Mild acne with blackheads, whiteheads, or a few red bumps
  • No signs of infection or skin breakdown
  • Child is not bothered or distressed by appearance

How to Treat at Home

 🏠 Home remedies for Acne:

  • Face Washing
    • Gently wash face twice a day with mild soap
    • Shampoo hair daily
    • Avoid scrubbing or exfoliating
  • Benzoyl Peroxide (OTC)
    • Apply pea-sized amount daily at bedtime
    • Redheads/blonds: apply every other day for first 2 weeks
    • Helps unclog pores and kill bacteria
  • Avoid:
    • Popping or squeezing pimples
    • Greasy makeup or hair products

Safe Medications

  • Benzoyl Peroxide (OTC lotion or gel)
  • Topical Retinoids (eg. Adapalene gel 0.1%, available OTC for >12 yrs old)
  • Can be used daily
  • Moisturizing is key, as retinoids are drying
  • Use sun protection daily (SPF 30 or greater)
  • Prescription antibiotics (topical or oral) for inflamed/red pimples
Always follow usage instructions carefully to avoid skin irritation
